Judge attacked in Las Vegas courtroom during sentencing

In Las Vegas, a disturbing incident occurred during a sentencing hearing when a man, identified as Deobra Redden, 30, who had been denied probation, attacked Judge Holthus. The violent episode, captured on video, took place in a Nevada courtroom on Wednesday morning.

Redden was in court for sentencing after pleading guilty to attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, according to a statement from the Eighth Judicial District Court. The court reported that Judge Holthus, 62, sustained injuries during the attack, and her condition is currently under observation. Additionally, a court marshal was injured and subsequently taken to a hospital, where he is believed to be in stable condition.

The court expressed appreciation for the heroic actions of its staff, law enforcement, and others who intervened to subdue the defendant, as stated in an official statement.

This unfortunate incident follows a similar case reported by The New York Times last year, where an individual received a 46-month prison sentence for assaulting a court security officer at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas in 2022, according to information from the Justice Department.
