About National Human Rights Commission
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a Statutory public body constituted on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance of September 28, 1993. It was given a statutory basis by the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 (PHRA).
The NHRC is the National Human Rights Commission of India, responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights, defined by the Act as “Rights Relating To Life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution or embodied in the International Covenants and enforceable by courts in India.
About the Opportunity
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressly been mandated to promote Human Rights literacy and awareness vide Section 12 (h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
For the year 2025, a four-week ‘Winter Internship Programme (WIP) 2025’ will commence from 15th December, 2025 (Monday) to 9th January, 2026 (Friday). Applications are invited from eligible students across the country.
Number of Vacancies
This year maximum of 80 students will be admitted for the Winter Internship Programme 2025. In addition, 20 students from the Delhi and NCR region may be kept on the waitlist.
In the event that an intern drops out of the internship, those who have been put on the waitlist may be called to join the internship no later than the second day of the Winter Internship Programme 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
- Students who have completed 1st year and are pursuing 2nd or 3rd year LLB (3 years) courses;
- Students who have completed 3 years OR Semester VI of the 5-year Integrated Course of BA LLB/ BBA LLB, etc. and are pursuing 4th and 5th years;
- Students pursuing the LLM Course;
- Students pursuing PG Diploma in Human Rights, MA in Human Rights, PG students of Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations and any of the disciplines of Social Sciences would be considered with preference to students pursuing their final year.
- Only students of regular courses of UGC-recognised universities will be eligible.
- Students must have attained a minimum of 65% marks in Class XII and all subsequent Semesters in attended/ attending degree programmes.
- The applicant should not be more than 28 years of age as on 01.10.2025.
- Attested photocopies of mark-sheets (by HoD, where the student is presently studying) for each and every year/ semester are to be submitted for all the succeeding years from Class X onward, failing which the application will be liable to be rejected.
- All the applications should be accompanied by a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) bearing the name, signature, date & rubber stamp/ seal of the Principal/ HOD/ Dean of the Institute where the applicant is studying as per Annex – I.
- Reservation as per the extant Government of India guidelines for SC/ ST/ OBC/ PwD categories will be applied. The candidate has to attach a self-attested Caste Certificate/ Disability Certificate (if applicable). In the event of an insufficient number of applications in a particular reserved category being received, the Commission would have the discretion to select the students from the General category.
- Efforts will be made to give representation to all the States/ UTS subject to receipt of adequate numbers of applications from the respective State/ UT and merit.
- A 250-word write-up (in online form) on the topic ‘Reason for joining as an Intern in NHRC’ will be required to be submitted by the applicants, which would also be considered as a Statement of Purpose (SOP), along with the online application, which will also serve as a basis of selection. Students who have research potential in the areas relating to human rights will be preferred (As indicated by them in the write-up).
- The merit will be made on the basis of marks calculated out of a total of 100 marks on account of Class XII @ 30 Marks, Graduation @ 40 Marks, and the Marks scored in the Write-up of 250 words @ 30 Marks
- Interested students may apply in the prescribed format given in Annexure. Application in any other format will not be entertained.
- The application must contain a recommendation of competent authority from the academic institution, where the candidate is pursuing her / his studies. Applications received without recommendations will not be entertained.
- Applicants are required to submit a ‘Statement of Purpose’ in about 200 words broadly covering a brief introduction of the topic and objectives of the study.
- The application should reach by 1st of the preceding month to the month for which application is intended to be made e.g.for Dec, 2016 application should reach by 1st Nov, 2016.

- Students who have attended the regular one-month winter/ Summer Internship Programmes organised by NHRC earlier will not be eligible to apply.
How to Apply?
- Enclose attested scanned copies of mark-sheets from 10th Standard onwards and mark-sheets of each year and each semester of the presently pursued course, and a recommendation by the concerned HOD/ Dean / Principal, which should be of a date subsequent to the date of uploading of this advertisement and for the presently pursued course.
- In the absence of the following, the applications are liable to be rejected:-
- Scanned attested copies of mark-sheets of 10th Class, 12th Class, All semesters of Graduation Course & mark sheets of all semesters of pursuing the Course.
- Statement of Purposes (SoPs), and
- Scanned Recommendation letter/ email by HOD/ Dean/ Principal concerned in the annexed proforma (Annexure-I).
- Incomplete application/applications without attested copies of mark-sheets (10th Class, 12th Class, All semesters of Graduation Course & pursuing Course), Letter of recommendation & SoPs, etc. will be rejected, and applications sent through e-mails/ posts will not be entertained.

- The applicants must not use prefixes Mr./ Mrs./ Ms. or any other such prefixes while filling in the details in the form.
- If any discrepancy, such as Marks/ CGPA/ Percentage, is found in the details given in any application, then the applicant will be barred from future programmes of NHRC, along with rejection of such application.
- The Final List of Selected Interns will be displayed on the NHRC website.
